Travel Guide: Charleston, SC

When I close my eyes to think of some of the magical places I've been there's one that is always top of mind and closest to home.  Charleston is one of the most darling cities! Known as the holy city the beautiful is located in the low country of South Carolina plus full of character, history, and some pretty amazing things! I travel here at least once a season and I cannot believe that I've yet to chat on the blog about literally one of my favorite places.  "Traveling leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller". These are words I for one truly believe so I'm sharing all the best of Charleston.  You'll find where to stay, what to eat, and a list of plenty of to-dos

As I mentioned Charleston is one of my favorite destinations closest to me.  Its about a 3 hour ride from Charlotte and certainly easiest enough for a weekend trip.  Charleston is often rated highest among top cities in the U.S.  and its easy to understand why.

Stay

The Mills House Wyndham Grand Hotel this hotel was the place I stayed on my latest trip and it was so amazing! It is down right charming, centrally located to all the destinations in historic downtown.  Just across the street are some of the most popular restaurants too, can't recommend enough.

The King Charles Inn is another darling hotel right in the heart of the city.  Stayed here last year and found it to be so darling for a value price.  This hotel is just a short walk to the market but the best feature of all is being just a skip away from one of my favorite Charleston dining spots!

Eat

Hominy Grill is hands down one of the best restaurants in Charleston! It is quaint, located in a house in the historic area of town.  The typical line of people outside is a sure indication that it is in fact THAT good.  The brunch here is my jam my biscuit (see what I did there?) but really its amazing and worth rolling out of bed a bit early to beat the crowds even on vacay!

Jestine's Kitchen, a little hole in the wall place or sorts.  This little place is not what I would call fancy dining but the food is beyond amazing!  If you're looking for good southern food this is where you want to be.  Fried chicken, macaroni & cheese, collard greens, and the best freaking cornbread muffins you've tasted in your life.  Trust me this is a place you won't want to miss!

82 Queen was my venture on my most recent trip to the city and it did not disappoint! My sister has been raving about this place for years.  We are southern born and raised so you know we're like experts on cuisine haha! Menu items has a little kick of spice and the seafood is divine.  I had just a hard time choosing being entrees that I got two.  I mean what's a girl to do?

Lowcountry Bistro is the sister restaurant to 82 Queen.  To be honest I stumbled upon this restaurant by chance.  Like caught in an epic downpour without an umbrella chance but I'm so glad I did.  This place is located right next to the market and is such a casual place to grab a bite to eat.  I have lunch but my favorite experience is the brunch.  Brunch for life! Am I right?  The biscuits are a-mazing! If you haven't caught on yet, I'd die for some good biscuits.

Kaminsky's Dessert Cafe don't do it! Just don't go to Charleston without ducking into this place.  When the sun goes down and the street lights are lit, this place is packed.  Don't let the line scare you off, put your name on the list and take a stroll around the market to kill the time.  Their desserts are divine and I can't explain the goodness of the brownie hot fudge Sunday.  Yes to it all!

Things To Do

Beach: You cannot go to Charleston without hitting the beach! There are many to choose from and each have a personality of their own.  Research Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, Kiawah.  My personal favorite is Sullivan's Island.  It's a laid back little town with great dining and the beach is gorgeous.

Shopping: Duh! I mean was it even a trip to Charleston if you didn't shop on King Street?  I don't think so!  There are chain stores like H&M,  J. Crew but then there are some of the most darling local shops for shopping!  Also, be sure to swing by the market! There are tons of handmade goods and trinkets to buy which

Historic:  Take a tour through some iconic areas of the city by going on a carriage ride.  These tours are led by people who really know their stuff, I love to hear all the details! Along the line of history take trip out to Boone Hall Plantation.  The history will make you laugh, cry, and enlighten you.  It was also where a portion of The Notebook was filmed.  Spend time just walking around the beauty will amaze you!

I love the city of Charleston and would travel there nearly every weekend if I could! There are still many places I want to try but thats the beauty of travel, you learn something new with each adventure!

Always,

Ashlei
